Tucked into a small nook off of Ocean Park Blvd. in Santa Monica is a little gem: GOODs. Calling the store pint-sized is not an understatement, but don’t let the size deceive you. Bright walls house a thoughtfully curated selection of artisan goods from around the world that are handcrafted, organic and always fair-trade.
Owners and curators Ivana Suvak and Katherine Inglis imported one-of-a-kind pieces from Europe, Central Asia and South America for years before deciding,--somewhat spontaneously--to open the shop in 2009. Suvak, originally from Croatia, and Inglis from Los Angeles, first met at their daughters’ elementary school. There, they discovered their shared aesthetic and entrepreneurial spirit--becoming dear friends along the way.
Today, they focus on selecting global and local pieces with a modern sensibility. From boldly colored textiles from Finland, locally made pottery and succulent arrangements, graphically patterned totes from Bolivia, baby gifts you won’t find anywhere else, unique jewelry pieces from Seattle and New York artists, to recycled washable paper totes from Toronto.
“We only carry those items that we would like to have in our own homes or give as gifts to those we love," says Suvak. "As a result, all GOODs wares are as natural as possible, fair-trade and in support of the many talented artisans we’ve built relationships with nearby and around the world. And because our store is so small (tiny actually!) we have to edit strictly," adds Inglis.
When you walk in, you can’t stop but to comment on the enticing fragrance and to think that the store has a high-end Etsy feel to it. It is a one-stop shop for thoughtful, beautifully wrapped gifts that set you apart and a great place for a little self-indulgence!
